The Friends of Oak Hill Chapel

About the Friends Group

The Friends of Oak Hill Chapel group was formed by several concerned citizens in response to the City of Janesville's decision to either raise funds for the Chapel's immediate repairs or face demolition. The first few meetings were informal discussions about how to proceed, and were followed by the formation of an actual group with officers and regularly scheduled meetings.

During the six months of time given by the City to raise $40,000 for the Chapel repairs, we made an alignment with the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, held several different fundraisers around the community, put on three Open Houses at Oak Hill Chapel, and even brought in the local schools by way of holding several Art Shows. The community response was tremendous, and by February 10th, we reached our goal of raising $40,000.

At the same time, it became clear that the Friends group was capable and willing to manage the restoration process. The City of Janesville agreed, and we are now in the process of doing just that. Skilled volunteers are offering their time and knowledge in virtually every aspect of the Chapel's restoration.

The first phase of restoration involves repairing the limestone walls, roof and other external features, and making available handicapped access.
